Doris Isabel Young

May 19, 1924 – Sept 22, 2019

Young, Doris Isabel (nee Morrison) - of Meaford, and former Holland Township resident, passed peacefully September 22, 2019, surrounded by her loving family, at Kelso Pines, Owen Sound at age 95.  Doris is now reunited with her husband Russell, who predeceased her in 1991. Doris is survived by her children Meredith Young (Sharon) of Berkeley, Bryan Young (Pat) of Chesley, and Christopher Young (Cherylann) of Ayton, and by her sister Joyce Steer. Loving grandma to Shawna Dwyer (Chris), Cory Young (Mandy) and great-grandma to Olivia, Collin, Rachael, Jordan, Shailyn, and Raven. Predeceased by her parents George and May Morrison (nee Dixon), and siblings Rita Ransome (Steve), Vera Boyd (Don), Freda McCauley (Elwood), Vida Hawken (Leslie), and brother-in-law Hilton Steer.

As was common in those days, Doris Morrison would come into the world as did  her parents; born on the family farm in Holland Township. At the age of 21, she married Russell Young, and together they settled on a farm near Walters Falls. On the farm, they would raise cattle, pigs, horses, and chickens, and Russell also worked at the local saw mill. Three boys would enrich their lives: Meredith (fondly known as Merdy), Bryan, and Chris. Doris was an amazing homemaker. She was a terrific cook, and never had to follow a recipe. Her large vegetable garden would yield almost all of the families needs, and at harvest time,  she would be preserving peaches, plums, and pickles. At springtime, she would be tapping the maples for the annual syrup run. Nothing went to waste... even cleaning out the fridge would result in the favourite “Dish Water Soup”, All of the clothes were hand-made, right down to the socks and gloves. Doris would frequent the sewing store in Markdale to buy yards of flannel to make shirts for her husband and boys. Her talent in the kitchen as a baker- all self-taught- found her a career as a cake-maker, especially wedding cakes, and in the summer months she would be creating one every week. Her artistry with cakes was also shared with her quilting, where every stitch was so light and fastidious. Inspiration for her designs could be found anywhere, even the cover of a Corn Flakes box! Every niece would receive one of Aunt Doris's quilts.
Doris was also active in her community and would head the local Women's Institute. She was part of a quilting circle of 10 – 12 friends that would meet one to two times per week. Family though, was always most important to her. The boys recall her as loving, kind, generous, and always ready to help with the math homework when called upon. From their early days of helping in the garden, she bestowed upon them a strong work ethic and when she had to hand out some discipline, she was always stern but fair. In her later years she cherished her role as a grandma and great-grandma. The warmth of her love will undoubtedly be remembered by all fortunate enough to wrap themselves in one of her quilts.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday September 25, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm at Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Chatsworth ON. The funeral service  will be held in the funeral home chapel at 12:00 noon on Thursday September 26, with a visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Rt. Reverend Tom Twose officiating. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Funeral Home reception area following the service.  Interment McLeans Cemetery, Bognor. The family wish to thank Chantelle Nichol, Charlene Rowe, Kylie Winters, and Brydon Adams for their kindness and dedicated care for their mom at Kelso Pines. If desired, donations to the Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce would be greatly appreciated. Condolences may be expressed at www.garafraxahillfuneral.com
