Lyall Cecil Ratcliffe
August 22, 1949 - February 24, 2026
It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of Lyall Ratcliffe on Tuesday, Feb 24th, at Brightshores Health System- Markdale, at age 76. He was the loving husband to Bonnie Ratcliffe (nee Quigley) of Markdale and very proud dad to Jody Bott (Adam) of Mount Forest, and Cory Ratcliffe (Margo) of Ottawa. Papa to Katie Bults (Branden), Jacob Bott (Jadyn), Zach Bott (Bailey Sabila), Madi Bott, and Connor, Sydney, and Harper Ratcliffe. Great-grandfather of Presley, Wren and Cody. Lyall was also excitedly waiting to meet his 4th great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings Ken Ratcliffe (Anna), Linda Rice (Ken), Don Ratcliffe (Jen), and sister-in-law Marilyn Ratcliffe. Predeceased by his brother Doug Ratcliffe, parents Mac and Marie Ratcliffe (nee Boyd) and father-in-law Elmer Quigley. Lyall will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and friends in the community.
Lyall was a deeply valued and active member of his community, always ready to lend his time, energy, and heart wherever it was needed. As an honourary member of the Markdale Rotary Club, he took great pride in contributing to its many initiatives and events. He truly loved being involved- whether supporting local projects, participating in community
gatherings, or simply connecting with friends and neighbours. Lyall's generosity of spirit and commitment to service has left a lasting impression
on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was also a member of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Workers Local Union 46; going back to school, George Brown College in Toronto, when he was 37 to obtain this certification. He often said he was a "jack of all trades, but master of none." Over the years, he was a farmer, a dry cleaner, a fuel delivery man, apple picker, worked at the lumber yard in town, a produce manager at the L&M, a plumber, a greens keeper, ice maker, and all around superhero! Over the years sports were a huge part of his life. You could find him on the baseball field, the hockey rink, the ski hills, and his favourite place, The Markdale Golf & Curling Club, either on the golf course, or the curling rink!
Lyall was so proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all of their accomplishments and was their biggest cheerleader! He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to the Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Chatsworth, Ont. A come and go Celebration of Life will be held at The Markdale Golf & Curling Club on Saturday, March 7, from 1:00 - 4:00pm. The family wishes to thank the amazing staff at Markdale Hospital for their excellent care, kindness, and love during this very difficult time, with special thanks to Dr. Abu and Dr. Webster. If desired, donations to the Centre Grey Hospital Foundation, The Markdale Recreation Committee, or the Markdale Golf & Curling Club, would be appreciated by the family. Condolences may be expressed online at garafraxahillfuneral.com.
