Remembering Willard Foster

From: Mary Hawthorne nee Haw

Sorry to learn of Willard’s passing. Well remember the games we played at the Foster farm, at the Heard house (my Grandmother) in Flesherton and the fun at the Bowes reunions as kids. He also kept us entertained as we came home for the weekend when he went to Lakeshore Teacher’s College and stayed at Keith & Mary’s. His sense of humour was special just like his dad’s.

From: Faye Fisher

Condolences to your family. I knew Willard through our shared work in education. I really enjoyed his quick smile and sense of humour. He was valued as an educator and community minded person. Faye Fisher

I first met Willard at CGDHS when I was in grade 9 and he was in grade 12 or 13. Even then you knew he was teacher, and he was good . Sorry for your loss.

Mora, so sorry to hear about Willard. The last time I saw him (and you) was at the Markdale centennial. He contacted me to let me know about the celebration. Fond memories of all you at Markdale high school.

From: Quentin Docherty

Dear Mora, David, Jennifer, and family, Please accept my sincere sympathies for your loss. Willard was my principal at Markdale and a valued professional mentor to me. I have so many fond memories of my time working with him. Willard truly cared for both his students and his staff. He had a special way of lightening and brightening each day through his kindness, encouragement, and wonderful sense of humour. His impact on those he worked with - and taught - will long be remembered. Thinking of you all during this difficult time. With heartfelt condolences, Quentin Docherty

So sorry to hear of the passing of Willard. He was my principal when I taught at Macphail. One of the best, he was. Willard knew the reason we were there as a staff and that was to teach the kids from our hearts. I will carry many good memories of him. Please accept my condolences.

From: Barb Henry

I had the privilege to work with Willard as my Principal. He always put the well being of the students first, usually by working outside of the box. He was known to order lumber and make picnic tables, power tools and all, with the kids who had very little interest in classroom math but got it when put into practice. He made us better educators just by watching him in action. I will always remember the twinkle in his eyes, especially when former principals would drop in for a visit. Condolences to all of his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Willard’s passing. I still think of all the fun times Clarke and Willard initiated. Whether it was tennis, curling spiels, or the Markdale Centennial it was always successful and fun. He was a good friend…the last time I saw him was in the hospital where he gave me encouragement for Clarke’s diagnosis. My deepest condolences to all the family but he’s at peace now.
