Douglas Robert Morris
May 29, 1960 - April 27, 2026

Doug Morris was the beloved son of Glenna Morris of Owen Sound, and the late Glen Morris. Doug passed away leaving behind a legacy of resilience, strength, and compassion that touched countless lives. As a young man, Doug had a passion for sports, music, and fishing, and worked as a roofer. In his early years, he faced challenges that led to difficult choices. At the age of 22, Doug suffered a life-altering brain injury after being found unconscious in a bus station. He remained in a coma for four weeks, and the incident left him with permanent brain damage, affecting his ability to walk and speak, and requiring the use of a wheelchair. Despite these profound challenges, Doug refused to let his circumstances define him. Instead, he chose to share his story openly and honestly, visiting classrooms to speak with youth about the consequences of his choices, hoping to inspire others to take a different path. His courage and transparency made a lasting impact on many. Doug was fiercely independent and determined to live life to the fullest. Though everyday tasks were often difficult, he took pride in doing as much as he could on his own and was always willing to lend a hand to others. His deep faith in God was a constant source of strength and guidance, and he often drew comfort from the cross tattoo on his arm, a symbol of his enduring belief. Doug was also deeply patriotic. At public events, he insisted on standing for the national anthem, removing his hat and placing his hand over his heart, demonstrating his respect and pride. He had a warm and outgoing personality, easily making friends wherever he went. Known for his love of card games like euchre and blackjack, Doug was rarely in the community without someone recognizing him and stopping to share a kind word. Doug became a member of the Participation Lodge family on July 6, 1988, initially living at St. Francis Place in Owen Sound, where he worked at the café and was well loved by both colleagues and patrons. He later moved to the Supported Group Living wing at the Holland Centre Site in 2017, where he enthusiastically participated in recreational programs including arts and crafts, concerts, sports events, shopping outings, fishing trips, and holiday celebrations. He was especially fond of the local Bluegrass Jam sessions.

Doug found great joy in activities that challenged him physically and emotionally. Through dedication and perseverance, he learned to ride horses at Hope Haven Therapeutic Riding Centre, progressing from just a few minutes on horseback to full lessons that brought him a sense of freedom. He also loved swimming and took every opportunity to enjoy time in the water. Doug worked tirelessly to improve his speech, practicing regularly and achieving meaningful progress that brought immense joy to his mother.

Doug shared a deeply loving bond with his mother, Glenna. They spent many cherished moments together, reminiscing about family camping trips and enjoying time over meals. Doug never visited without bringing her a gift, often handmade, tokens of his enduring love and thoughtfulness.

In March 2024, Doug moved to the Acquired Brain Injury wing at the Holland Centre Site, where he continued to thrive in a close-knit, supportive environment. He remained fiercely independent to the very end, always determined to overcome obstacles and prove his strength. Doug’s passing came as a shock to those who knew him, as he carried himself with toughness and an unbreakable spirit. Even in moments of struggle, he found humor and determination, always rising again with minimal help. In his mind, there was nothing he could not achieve. Doug dreamed big—imagining himself as a fighter pilot, a racecar driver, a jockey, an astronaut, even the first person to land on Mars. Today, those dreams feel closer than ever. Doug will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and the power of the human spirit. The sky is no longer the limit—Dougy, you have earned your wings.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Chatsworth. A graveside service for Doug will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound, on Tuesday, May 5, at 2:00pm. If desired, memorial donations to Participation Lodge in Holland Centre, would be appreciated. Condolences may be expressed online at www.garafraxahillfuneral.com.
