Vernin Mervyne 'Merv' Feltis
December 15, 1945 - May 30, 2025
With his loving family by his side, Merv Feltis of Chatsworth, passed peacefully on Friday May 30, 2025, at age 79. Cherished husband of 57 years to Myrna Lynne Feltis (nee Carmichael). Loving father of Mark Feltis (Tammy) of Balmy Beach and Melissa McComb (Chris) of Chatsworth. Proud poppa of grandchildren Brock Feltis (Brittany), Kaitlyn Hooey (Trent), Mitchell McComb, and Colby McComb (Kassie), and of great-grandchildren Carter, Macey, Charley, Jaxon, and baby Feltis on the way. Merv is survived by his siblings Darlene McCartney (Wayne) and Tammy Boone (Dave), in-laws David Robinson, Bradey Carmichael (Marilyn), Christine MacDonald (Dan), and by his parents-in-law Ivan and Ada Carmichael. He was predeceased by his siblings Bob Feltis (Gertie), Marie Smith (Doug), Debbie Feltis, sister-in-law Debora Robinson, and his parents Robert James and Margaret Janet Lureine Feltis (nee Schank). Merv will be fondly remembered by his many nieces , nephews, and friends in the community.
For 57 years he was the beloved husband of Myrna. Their courtship beginning in grade 5 when he would ride his bike past her place and that slicked hair and brilliant blue eyes caught her eye and he stole her heart forever. Merv was a devoted father and father- in-law, proud grandfather, great-grandfather and trusted friend. At the age of 15, Merv began to build a life grounded in hard work, laughter and unwavering love. He was a man who didn’t just work hard- he worked with care, precision and pride, his car washed and cleaned every week, even the lawn tractor would be left sparkling clean after each use.
To support his family Merv applied his hand to many trades including funeral home attendant at Breckenbridge Ashcroft, a service attendant at Whalens Sunoco and afternoon shifts at RCA factory.
He was extremely handy and capable, building his own home in 1975, a place the family still calls home.
In 1979 he was hired by his father-in-law Ivan at Carmichaels John Deere. Ivan needed a construction crew so Merv and his brother-in-law Dave Robinson partnered up and were known as the Stan and Ollie construction crew. Merv continued to work for Carmichaels for 35 plus years and was their jack of all trades man; he was a mechanic, painter, the polisher but everyone knew him as the truck driver. Driving that flatbed was his passion. It was known as Merv’s truck and Ivan never had to worry about its appearance because Merv kept it as clean as his car.
Over the years and hundreds of deliveries to the many customers. He became a friend to most and transitioned from truck driver to Carmichaels customer liason. He knew what each customer expected and if things weren’t right he would make damn sure that they would make it right.
He found joy in the simple pleasures; a freshly cut lawn, a well-kept garden, keeping his home and garage spotless, a walk in his old work boots with his Scotch Collie “Lady”, or a Labatt Blue (with salt) in hand during family garage party celebrations.
His Christmas spirit was legendary- his home lit up the night with hundreds of glowing green lights, installed with perfection and in the basement a flawless Douglas fir decorated to perfection, surrounded by meticulously wrapped gifts. He also decorated and then drove the John Deere Christmas float in the Chatsworth Christmas parade for over 3 decades, which would bring joy to many.
He was a great prankster and many a family member would be the victim of an April fools tale. He would tease his sisters and grandkids every chance he could and come Christmas time, no one knew if that meticulously wrapped gift was a toy or an old pair of work boots.
Merv loved music, it was always on in the garage as he worked outside. He enjoyed a good garage party with family or a jam session when family would sit around the fire, play guitars, sing and dance. He loved and supported his kids and grandchildren and was there to cheer them on while they played hockey, figure skating, baseball and lacrosse. He was the man who said "yes" when others hesitated: yes to driving neighbourhood kids to countless baseball, hockey games and figure skating events. Yes to summer cottage trips and far-off adventures with the family. Yes to numerous holidays with Darlene and Wayne to Florida, Eastern Canada, and Northern States, Europe -he loved Rome-, the Grand Canyon; and yes—even to a 3½-hour wait for the Avatar 3D and Aerosmith Rock'n'Roll roller coasters at Disney World, just to share the thrill with those he loved. And one year when his daughter didn’t see Mickey Mouse in a day trip to Disney World, he rented a full Mickey Mouse costume to attend her buck & doe celebration.
He was a proud father and father-in-law of two children Mark and his wife Tammy, Melissa and her husband Chris. Their accomplishments meant everything to him. Merv always showed up for his work, his family and community and always at his side was his beloved Myrna. Following a devastating diagnosis at the age of 50 his love for and dedication to Myrna, and her love, will, patience and advocacy on his behalf gave him 30 extra years with us. Merv set the bar high and leaves behind not just memories but a legacy of dedication, determination, resilience and whole hearted love. He was the kind of supportive man you could count on and one you will never forget.
