Cheryl Saunders

April 10, 1953  -  July 26, 2017

Saunders, Cheryl Lee – Cheryl Saunders of Holland Centre passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Chapman House in Owen Sound, on Wednesday July 26th, 2017 at age 64. Cheryl is survived by her dear husband of 37 years, Brian Saunders, and their sons Matthew Saunders of Owen Sound and Steven (Kira) Saunders of Walters Falls. Cherished grandmother of  Brooklynn, Claire, Jordan, Mikayla, and Emmett. Also survived by her siblings Ross Shaw (Elke), Ron Shaw (Connie), Carol Shaw Peirson (Richard), Ray Shaw (Monica), Rob Shaw (Monika Rust), Reg Shaw (LeeAnn) and Corrie Shaw. Lovingly remembered by brother-in-law Bruce Saunders (Margaret), sisters-in-law Lois McCulloch (Gary), Lori Smith (David) and Jo-Ann Stevenson. Affectionately remembered by father-in-law Ed Saunders, her aunts Velma, Anne, Lois as well as by many nieces and nephews. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents Elwood and Alice Shaw (nee Vickers), brother Randy Shaw, mother-in-law Eleanor Saunders, nephew Michael Bews and niece Tanya Shaw.

In front of a rowdy Shaw clan at a dance in Markdale, a young farm lad crossed the room to ask Cheryl to dance. Having shown that bravery, her sisters told her “he's a keeper”. Three years later, that lad named Brian Saunders and Cheryl were married. Together they raised their two boys on the family dairy farm, and Cheryl went on to have a long career with Service Canada, primarily dealing with the UIC. Her friends and co-workers remember her great sense of humour, as well as being caring, well organized, and always thinking of others before herself. She loved life on the farm; tending to both flower and vegetable gardens, and she always believed that the cows were “so misunderstood”. Cheryl's baking, especially the desserts, pies, and squares were always a hit an any dinner or event. Travel was also a passion, and Cuba, Spain, and taking the trailer west to Alberta created lasting memories. Above all, she loved her children and grandchildren. Always a fighter, she never complained and she will be so fondly remembered by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the GARAFRAXA HILL FUNERAL HOME, Chatsworth on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.; eulogies and stories will be shared at 2:00 p.m. with lunch, libations and fellowship to follow.  If desired, donations to Chapman House would be greatly appreciated by the family.
