Blackman- June Dawn Blackman (nee Howey) of Chatsworth, passed peacefully in Owen Sound, on June 1st, 2018, at age 87. Beloved wife of the late Bert Blackman. She is survived by her children Jim Blackman (Starr) of Innerkip, Ann Coburn (Dave) of Hamilton, Jennifer Mackey (Scott) of Chatsworth and Dave Blackman (Kelly) of Carleton Place. Cherished grand-“momma” to Ben (Sofika), Kate , Karin (Jeremie), Deann (Al), Amy (Dave), Angela (Michael), Devin (Vanessa), Meaghan, Robert, Adam, Emma, Hannah, Doug, Evan (Kate), and proud great-grandma of nine. Also survived by brother-in-law Doug Blackman (Joan). Predeceased by her parents James and Mary (Connell) Howey, siblings Clayton Howey, Marjorie McInnis, Mary McKessock, and Jean Kirk, and grandson Darren Coburn.
Dawn was born and raised in Grey County, loved the area, and was a stalwart supporter of her community. Together with husband Bert, they raised their four children on their 25 acre hobby farm in Holland Township. Horses, cows, chickens and of course the cats, were always around to keep the kids, not only busy, but teach them some of the lessons of rural living including churning butter and pickling. Throughout Dawn's life, she believed that learning never ends and that every moment presented a teaching moment. Many in the area will remember her as their teacher at a one room school house or since 1968, as the librarian at Holland Chatsworth Central School, where her organizational skills and love of books were self-evident. Dawn herself was a walking encyclopedia, and possessed an impressive memory for facts and figures; National Geographic magazines being among her favourite. She delighted in playing cards; (cribbage, euchre, rummy and pepper) all providing an opportunity for teaching math skills to the children. After Bert's passing in 1980 she became the sole bread winner and parent, remaining vested in the childrens activities, attending all of their school functions. She loved all things British; the monarchy, the TV shows, and even taking a literary course in England over the summer just for fun. Special travel memories included Alaska, Ireland, Egypt and Russia, either with family or special friends Audrey Loucks and Jean Walker. Closer to home, she enjoyed outings to the theatres at Stratford and Niagara, art galleries, foreign films, and the Grey-Roots museum. Dining out was also a treat, especially her favourite Ted's Range Road Diner, or anywhere good sushi could be found. Quiet times might find her sitting in the shade at the family cottage at William's Lake, that she purchased just to have the love of family surround her. All who knew her will miss the lively conversations about books and theatre, and her lifelong passion and commitment to learning.
A celebration of Dawn's life will be held at the GARAFRAXA HILL FUNERAL HOME, Chatsworth, from 4:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday June 8, 2018. If desired, donations to Chatsworth Community Outreach or the Grey-Bruce Animal Shelter would be appreciated by the family.
