Dieter Schoen
February 21, 1943 - June 30, 2017
Dieter Schoen, of Chatsworth, passed peacefully at home at the age of 74 on June 30 2017, with his loving wife of fifty years, Ruby (nee Holm) by his side. Dieter is survived by his children Michael Schoen (Darlene) and Heidi Schoen. He will be fondly remembered by his three grandchildren Stacey Perron (Mark), Lindsay Houghton (Cory), and Ashley Heino (Mike), and by his sister-in-law Elvira Schoen. Dieter was predeceased by his brother Klaus and his dearly departed grandson Kurtis Schoen.
Dieter was born in Frankfurt Germany and emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1961, settling in the Hanover area. His signature hairstyle quickly led to his new friends nicknaming him 'Beatle'. In 1964 he met Ruby, and they married on January 27, 1967. They were blessed with their children Michael and Heidi, and Dieter then found a new life as a devoted and loving father. He loved taking the children horseback riding, swimming, to piano lessons, and hockey and reluctantly, baseball; even taking a few hours off work to catch a game wherever the kids were playing. Motorcycles and animals were also loves of his life. Starting with a BSA, he also rode BMW, Honda, and lastly a Harley. His family enjoyed life on two wheels and would ride not only to work but also on day trips together. Pets were constant companions, as there always seemed to be a stray dog that needed a good home. Dieter was a talented machinist and spent most of his working life in Owen Sound at Kennedy's and Hobart's. In later years he enjoyed classic car shows where he proudly displayed his 1981 Chrysler Imperial. 1981 would also be a turning point in his life as the year he was born again. The car shows would always conclude with passionate discussions of faith, and his belief in the Lord. His family and friends will always remember the spark in his wit, and his ability to make an instant connection with others.
Visitations will be held at the GARAFRAXA HILL FUNERAL HOME, Chatsworth, on Wednesday July 5, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A funeral service for Dieter Schoen will be held at Calvary Evangelical Missionary Church, Owen Sound, Thursday July 6, at 12:00 pm, with a visitation one hour prior, Pastor Mary Turner officiating. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the church reception area following the service. Interment at Shiloh Cemetery, Chatsworth. Donations to OSHaRE Owen Sound or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. Condolences may be expressed online at www.garafraxahillfuneral.com.
