Maurice 'Moe' Morrel Batterman
September 19, 1947 - June 10, 2025
Surrounded by his loving family, former Sullivan Township resident Maurice 'Moe' Batterman, passed peacefully at Chapman House in Owen Sound, on Tuesday June 10, 2025, at age 77. Cherished husband of 56 years to Gwenyth Marie Batterman (nee McKay). Proud father of Trent Batterman (Tracy) of Shallow Lake and Todd Batterman (Lacey Klages) of Chesley. Loving grandfather of Kennedy Hobbs (Nick), Bailey Hobbs (Travis), and Ava Stoddart, Ainsley Stoddart and Elsa Stoddart. Doting great-grandpa to Lainey Vermilyea. Moe is survived by his siblings Helen Kuglin and Wayne Batterman (Mary Kuopher) and in-laws Mary Anne McKay (Gord) and Paul McKay (Jean). He was predeceased by his brother Allan Batterman (June), in-laws Bill Kuglin and Lorena Batterman, and his parents Bill and Emma Batterman (nee Engel). Moe will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and friends in the community.
Moe was a hardworking, humble, and deeply faithful man whose presence enriched the lives of everyone around him through his words, deeds, and music.
Moe was a man who loved the outdoors and rarely missed a day of work. Dependable, and dedicated, he believed in showing up ontime, giving your best, and doing it with heart. These weren’t just habits—they were principles he lived by. His tireless work ethic spoke volumes about his strength of character and quiet determination.
Whether working the land as a boy and again later in life, enjoying nature, or simply being outside, it was where he felt at peace. But Moe was also a man of many talents. He applied these to many Owen Sound area jobs, including Hobarts, Pepsi, Bill Kuglin Construction, Sheamus Fay Construction, and lastly Tennaco as a material handler; everyone loved working alongside as he and co-workers worked a cheerful line . While not thrilled with the corporate hierarchy, he loved the people he worked with. He was also a gifted musician—known to some as the Music Man--able to sing and play guitar, banjo, piano, and drums. Music flowed naturally through him, and it was through that love of music that he met Gwen, the love of his life. They met as teens while he was playing in a family band, the Harmony B's, (who would become a Saturday night staple in Bognor for many years), introduced by her cousin, it was love at first sight. They would date on the weekends as Gwen lived in the city, and she insisted he write her every week. At 20 years of age they would marry and settle into an apartment in Owen Sound. After 16 years they moved to a house close to his parents farm and raised cattle, still never missing work, even if he'd been up all night haying or delivering calves.
Together, Moe and Gwen raised two sons he was so proud of, even though he couldn't understand why they didn't want to play baseball everyday. He led by example—teaching them through his actions what it meant to be honest, hardworking, faithful, and kind and supporting them in everything they did. He was a father who showed up, just like he did for everyone in his life.
Moe also had a deep passion for baseball. He was known as a reliable second baseman and always wore his favourite number—#4. The game wasn’t just a sport to Moe—it reflected his values: teamwork, consistency, and giving your all, even when no one’s watching. He began playing in men's fastball at age 14, starting with Williamsford, then to the Owen Sound's Scenic City league for first McArthur Tire and later the Trio Restaurant club, where they won 5 consecutive titles. Although his playing days concluded after 36 years, at the Moto Park Selects Slo-Pitch club, his passion for the game extended to coaching and umpiring as well.
A man of unwavering Christian faith, Moe lived his beliefs each day. He was devoted to his church and deeply committed to his community. He was intimately involved with the building of the Williamsford Community Centre and ball diamond, from his homestead, to the planning and implementation, Moe was immensely proud of what his small community could accomplish together, all on time and on budget. He always made sure that everything was paid back and lived by the adage “only have what you can afford”. He didn’t need recognition—he simply helped where help was needed, and loved where love was called for. He often shared three sayings to succeed in this life: “I don't know. I can't remember. It was like this when I got here.”
That’s also part of who Moe was—a jokester and prankster, who was amazingly funny, when he wasn't trying to be. He usually started to laugh long before he got to the punchline. At age 60, Moe retired and his focus highlighted his home and community. He loved animals and his Collie Waggles, and cat Charlie, became constant companions. He and Gwen enjoyed Attack games and tending the gardens. Moe's lawn was frequently the talk of the area. He also enjoyed curling, cards and checkers, and was an accomplished bridge and trophy winning chess player.
Moe leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, integrity, and service. Though we feel the weight of his absence, we are grateful for the life he lived and the example he set. His story lives on in those he loved, in the music he played, the fields he walked, and the lives he touched. He was a husband, a father, a friend, a teammate, a believer—and one of the good ones. Forever second base. Forever number 4. Forever in our hearts.
